Home security systems - basics?

home security
Kavan Lee asked:

What should I look for in a home security system, and how much should a good one cost?

I'm considering ADT right now, but just because it's the biggest name and I'm clueless on this topic.

Thanks!

  1. ADT is OK…not the cheapest. Check around. One thing I'll tell you is…..don't get a BRINKS system. They are good…don't get me wrong….but they are a proprietary system….which means they will only work on their monitor system. At a later date if you want to change to a cheaper monitoring company…their system will not work. Other companies use a basic system that anyone can monitor.

  2. I would go around the neighborhood and ask folks who have home security signs. Tell them you are considering having a system installed, but ask only one question. "Are you satisfied with your alarm company." Ask any more, and folks will get suspicious. If they volunteer more, fine, but don't push them.

Personally I do not like ADT.
